Logan’s Epigenetics Presentation (December 2025)
Logan’s epigenetics presentation was a twenty-seven-minute final presentation delivered on December 10, 2025, in Dr. Harrison’s Genetics course at Howard University. Seventeen-year-old Logan presented ‘’Epigenetic Modifications in Cancer Progression: A Comprehensive Analysis of Histone Methylation Patterns’’ to forty-three juniors and seniors. His analysis prompted Harrison to invite him to discuss coauthoring a review paper on the same cancer-epigenetics topic.
Presentation
Logan developed a migraine approximately twelve minutes into the talk. He had eaten one protein bar that day, had consumed three cups of coffee, and could not remember his last full meal. He nevertheless maintained a steady speaking voice and continued through the complete presentation.
The talk examined the role of EZH2 in polycomb repressive complex 2 and the trimethylation of histone H3 at lysine 27. Logan explained how H3K27me3 creates a repressive chromatin state and why that mechanism matters in aggressive metastatic cancers.
During questions, a senior asked Logan to reconcile the Morrison study with the Chen meta-analysis on H3K27me3 levels in early- and late-stage tumors. Logan distinguished Morrison’s smaller, breast-cancer-only sample from Chen’s analysis across twelve cancer types and explained how tissue origin and genetic background resolved the apparent conflict.
A second question concerned therapeutic applications. Logan described three EZH2 inhibitors in phase II trials, identified tazemetostat as the most promising in relapsed follicular lymphoma, and explained the problem of finding a therapeutic window that suppressed tumor growth without broadly disrupting normal cellular pathways. He also interpreted chromatin-immunoprecipitation data and answered further questions by synthesizing research he had read during the semester.
Logan concluded that reversible epigenetic modifications offered therapeutic opportunities unavailable with fixed genetic mutations, but that the complexity of the epigenetic landscape required approaches more precise than generalized enzyme inhibition. The class applauded.
Harrison’s invitation
Harrison described the work as graduate-level analysis and asked Logan to remain after the room began clearing. He invited Logan to discuss coauthoring a review paper on the cancer and histone-methylation research. Logan accepted the invitation in principle and asked to continue the conversation by email because his nausea had become urgent. Harrison noticed that he was pale and agreed to speak after the break.
The invitation was distinct from Logan’s separate work on environmental influences on gene expression and the biological effects of trauma across generations. That research remained part of his wider undergraduate interests, but it was not the December 10 presentation and did not generate Harrison’s review-paper offer.
Acute aftermath
Logan walked out of the lecture hall, then ran to the nearest bathroom. He reached an empty stall and vomited coffee, the protein bar, and stomach acid while the migraine intensified. His hands shook, sweat soaked his shirt, and he remained on the floor against the stall wall after the vomiting stopped.
Marcus Dupree texted to ask how the presentation had gone. Logan answered that it had gone well without initially disclosing his condition. When Charlie Rivera asked the same question, Logan told him both parts: he had succeeded and was now vomiting in the bathroom. Charlie told him that the vomiting was not an acceptable cost of the presentation, asked him to eat, and also said that he was proud of him.
The presentation was the first crisis in a larger December 10 sequence. Logan later led six students through a neuroanatomy study session while experiencing worsening migraine and abdominal pain, vomited again in a nearby bathroom, and finally accepted Jaya Mitchell’s intervention. Marcus stayed with him in Cook Hall that night. The progression continued through Logan’s Finals Week Breakdown (December 2025) - Event.
Long-term significance
The presentation established both the quality of Logan’s first-semester scientific work and the danger of evaluating his functioning only from the task he completed. The students and Harrison saw a precise, controlled presentation and complete command of the literature. Charlie, Marcus, and the friends who cared for him afterward saw the depleted body that had sustained it.
Harrison’s invitation linked Logan’s first semester to the research life he resumed after medical leave. Logan’s separate interest in trauma, environment, and gene expression later remained relevant to his work on post-trauma recovery without being conflated with the cancer-histone presentation.
